Every seedling in our nursery starts with seed collected fresh from established local trees ahead of each planting season, a process that's worked well enough but that leaves us dependent on the timing and availability of good seed each time a new batch is needed. Our youth nursery team is now building something more durable: a proper seed bank that stores viable seed between seasons rather than requiring a fresh collection effort every time.

Why fresh collection each season has real limits

Collecting fresh seed ahead of each planting season has worked, but it ties our seedling supply tightly to whichever trees happen to be fruiting or seeding at the right time, which isn't always the species we most want more of for a specific site. It also means a poor seed year for a particular species, whether due to weather or simply natural variation, directly constrains what we can grow that season with no buffer to fall back on.

A seed bank changes that relationship. Properly dried and stored seed from a good collection year can be drawn on in a leaner one, giving the nursery a buffer that smooths out the natural variability of seed availability from one season to the next, and letting the team plan species mix for an upcoming planting season based on what a site actually needs rather than purely on what happened to be available to collect that particular season.

What building it actually involves

The team is learning proper seed drying and storage technique specific to each species we work with regularly, since viable storage life and the right drying process vary meaningfully between species, what works for one indigenous tree's seed doesn't necessarily transfer directly to another's. This has meant a fair amount of research and, in a few cases, learning through a failed storage attempt where seed that wasn't dried properly before storage lost viability faster than expected.

Storage itself needs to be cool, dry and pest-free, conditions that took some trial and error to achieve reliably with the modest facilities available to a volunteer-run nursery, well short of a proper seed bank facility's climate-controlled storage but adequate for the shorter storage periods we're targeting rather than the multi-year storage a formal seed bank might aim for.

What this unlocks for our planting programme

Beyond simply smoothing out supply, a working seed bank gives us more deliberate control over species mix at each planting site, matching what we plant to what our site survey and four years of survival data suggest performs best in specific conditions, rather than being constrained to whatever was collected most recently. It also means seed from a particularly successful specimen tree, one that's clearly thrived in conditions similar to a target planting site, can be prioritised and stored specifically for that purpose rather than lost to the natural turnover of an entirely fresh-collection-based system.

We expect the seed bank to take another full season or two to reach a scale where it meaningfully reduces our dependence on fresh collection, but the early results from the batches stored so far have been encouraging enough that we're confident it's the right direction for the nursery programme's next phase.

A new skill set for the youth team

Seed banking has also added a genuinely new, specialised skill to what our youth nursery team can offer, distinct from the germination and hardening expertise they'd already built, and one that adds further to the kind of concrete, transferable green skills the youth green livelihoods track is built around. Team members leading this effort are, in effect, becoming the resident experts in a discipline few other local groups have developed in-house, which we think adds real long-term value both to the programme and to their own skill set.

What other small nurseries could learn from our approach

We're aware that most community nurseries our size don't attempt a seed bank, largely because it's easy to assume the infrastructure required is beyond a small volunteer operation's reach. Our experience so far suggests that's not entirely true, a seed bank doesn't need to start at the scale or sophistication of a formal seed conservation facility to add real value; even a modest, carefully managed store covering a handful of key species has already smoothed out supply gaps we'd have otherwise faced this season.

Our advice to another small nursery considering something similar would be to start narrow, pick two or three species that are both important to your planting plans and reasonably well understood in terms of storage requirements, rather than attempting to bank seed from everything you grow at once. That narrower starting point is roughly how our own youth team approached this, and it's let them build real expertise on a manageable scope before expanding to the wider range of species they're now working with.
