Sustainable living is often presented as expensive or complicated. Most of what actually moves the needle at household level in Donholm is neither, and the five habits below are the ones we return to most often in our own training sessions.

The five habits

Separate organic waste for composting instead of binning it with everything else, turning what would be landfill-bound waste into usable fertiliser within weeks. Fix dripping taps promptly rather than letting them run for weeks, a small daily leak adds up to a surprising volume of wasted water over a month. Switch off lights and unplug chargers that aren't in use, small but consistent electricity savings that show up clearly once a household actually tracks a monthly bill before and after. Reuse containers and sacks instead of buying new storage, cutting both cost and the plastic entering the waste stream. And plant even one indigenous tree or shrub in whatever compound space is available, contributing to the same tree cover our nursery and planting days are working to restore across the neighbourhood.

None of these habits require a special budget, which is deliberate. Sessions that ask households to spend money upfront tend to see far lower follow-through than ones built entirely around free changes in routine.

Where to start if all five feel like a lot

We'd suggest starting with composting, since it's the habit with the fastest visible payoff, dark, usable compost within six to eight weeks, which tends to build the motivation to take on the others afterward. Together they meaningfully reduce a household's waste, water and energy footprint over time.

We cover all five in more depth during our household sustainability sessions, held monthly across different parts of Donholm, with hands-on demonstrations rather than a lecture format. Check our Get Involved page for the next session near you.
