Of everything we cover in our environmental education sessions, climate change is consistently the hardest to teach well at primary-school level. Pitched too abstractly, pupils disengage; pitched too starkly, some pupils walk away anxious rather than informed. Over several terms running these sessions across our partner schools, we've settled on an approach that tries to avoid both problems.
Starting local, not global
We deliberately avoid opening with global statistics or distant, abstract consequences, since ten-year-olds have limited context for interpreting a number like a global temperature rise in degrees, and it tends to feel disconnected from anything in their own experience. Instead, we start with changes pupils can recognise directly: rainfall arriving in shorter, harder bursts rather than the more even pattern older residents describe from years past, and the flooding that results when drainage channels near their own school or home can't cope with that intensity.
This local starting point does two things at once, it makes the topic concrete rather than abstract, and it connects directly to work pupils have often already done in our sessions, like a waste audit or a drainage clean-up, so climate change stops being a separate, disconnected topic and becomes an explanation for why some of the other activities matter.
Balancing honesty with reassurance
We don't soften the basic facts, pupils this age can handle a straightforward explanation of what's happening and why, delivered without alarmist language. What we're more careful about is pairing that honesty with a clear sense of agency, making sure the session doesn't end on the problem alone but moves toward what can actually be done about it, including things pupils themselves have already participated in, like tree planting and waste sorting, which measurably help at the local scale even though they don't solve the global problem outright.
We've found this balance matters more than any specific fact or statistic in the session. Sessions that dwell too long on the scale of the problem without a clear next step tend to leave pupils quieter and more withdrawn afterward, while sessions that connect the problem directly to actions pupils recognise as within their own reach tend to end with far more questions and engagement rather than less.
Using activities pupils have already done as evidence
Rather than introducing climate change as an entirely new topic, we build the session around evidence pupils already have from earlier activities: the visible difference tree cover makes to how hot a spot feels at midday, something most pupils have noticed directly during a planting day, or how a cleared drainage channel handles a heavy rain differently from a blocked one, something several of our partner schools have witnessed firsthand near their own grounds after a nearby clean-up.
Using pupils' own prior experience as evidence, rather than asking them to take an abstract claim on faith, has made the topic land considerably better than a purely lecture-based version of the same content did in our earliest attempts at this session, before we restructured it around local, hands-on reference points.
What we'd tell another organisation trying this
If there's one piece of advice we'd give another group teaching this topic to a similar age group, it's to resist the temptation to lead with the scale of the problem. Start local, use whatever hands-on environmental activity the group has already done together as your evidence base, and make sure the session ends on agency rather than alarm. It's a harder session to design well than most of what we teach, but it's also, by pupil and teacher feedback, one of the ones that sticks longest afterward.
How teachers can extend the session afterward
The session itself typically runs a single class period, but teachers at our partner schools have found ways to extend its impact well beyond that single sitting. A few have set up an ongoing weather observation activity, pupils noting rainfall and temperature at school across a term, which gives them a small, personally collected dataset to refer back to rather than relying purely on what a single session told them. Others have tied the session directly into a subsequent class activity, an art project depicting a local flood-prone spot before and after a hypothetical clean-up, for instance, which keeps the topic present in a low-pressure, creative form rather than as a single, self-contained lesson that's easily forgotten once the term moves on.
